Spine & Vertebral Diseases — Overview & Ayurvedic Understanding

Our spine speciality addresses lumbar slip disc, cervical spondylosis, sciatica, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, radiculopathy, myelopathy and other spine related conditions in a holistic manner based on integration of Ayurveda with modern diagnostics, Physiotherapy & Yoga. Most patients arrive in pain, often after months of unsuccessful conservative care or with surgery recommended. Our integrated programme combines Ayurvedic spinal therapies, targeted medicines, physiotherapy, and yoga — usually avoiding surgery even in sever conditions.

Symptoms of Spine & Vertebral Diseases

Lower-back pain radiating to the leg (sciatica)

Pain in the neck only or radiating to the scalp, chest, shoulders and arms with or without numbness, weakness or tingling in the arms.

Morning stiffness that eases with movement

Pain on prolonged sitting or standing

Weakness, numbness, or loss of sensation

Loss of bladder or bowel control (requires urgent surgical review)

Causes & Risk Factors for Spine & Vertebral Diseases

Sedentary lifestyle and poor posture

Repeated lifting, twisting, or vibration exposure

Age-related disc degeneration (spondylosis)

Obesity and weak core musculature

Incorrect gym or exercise technique

Genetic predisposition to disc degeneration

How We Diagnose Spine & Vertebral Diseases

Thorough clinical examination along with detailed history, MRI review for disc status, nerve-root compression, and spinal cord signal coinciding with symptom pattern helps diagnosis. This is combined with Physical examination including Straight-leg raise, Spurling's test, dermatomal mapping are also used to know the current state. Roland Morris Scale, VAS pain score and Quality of Life questionnaire are used to evaluate baseline and progress with treatment.

Spine & Vertebral Diseases — Surgery vs Non-Surgical Ayurvedic Treatment

Why Non-Surgical Ayurvedic Treatment Works for Spine & Vertebral Diseases

Ayurvedic therapies directly address nerve-root inflammation, disc hydration, and muscle-guarding. In our practice, 90-95% of lumbar disc prolapse and sciatica patients avoid surgery through structured non-surgical care — even many with large disc extrusions.

When Surgery Is the Right Path

Progressive motor weakness or foot drop. Cauda equina syndrome (bladder or bowel dysfunction). Severe central canal stenosis with intractable claudication. Failed 3-6 month supervised non-surgical trial with worsening symptoms.

We maintain transparent referral relationships with leading orthopaedic and specialist surgeons.

Key Outcomes

90 - 95% of lumbar disc / sciatica patients avoid surgery completely through our programme

Upto 80% improvement in Roland Morris score is usually achieved by discharge and the residual pain and symptoms usually vanish within a month or two of following the continuation protocol including the exercises recommended.

Most patients with mild to moderate pain achieve meaningful pain reduction within 7-10 days

Low recurrence rates when home exercise protocol is maintained.

Treatment Pathways for Spine & Vertebral Diseases

Outpatient (OP)

In milder and early stages, many spine and disc conditions respond well to Ayurvedic medicines and guided home care after an initial consultation; inpatient or visiting therapy is reserved for more advanced or non-responding cases.

Ayurvedic Treatment Approach for Spine & Vertebral Diseases

Spinal conditions — from acute disc prolapse to chronic spondylosis and spondylolisthesis — require careful stage-specific treatment. Our spine team at AVN calibrates every programme to the exact presentation in front of them. At AVN Arogya, there is no fixed protocol.

Every patient's programme is designed personally by the treating physician based on the specific stage of the disease, the current inflammatory state, the dosha vitiation pattern, constitutional type (Prakriti), and individual response to treatment. This physician-crafted approach — refined across four generations of AVN clinical practice — is what makes our care genuinely personalised rather than packaged. A degenerative presentation with an inflammatory override, for example, is never treated with strengthening therapies at the outset — anti-inflammatory measures are prioritised first, and rebuilding therapies are introduced only when appropriate.

Medicines, herbal combinations, and internal formulations are equally individualised: what works for one patient's presentation will not necessarily suit another's. Your programme will draw on the full range of classical Ayurvedic tools — Panchakarma (the five purification procedures), Kerala therapies, localised Vasti therapies, Upakarma (supportive procedures), and para-surgical interventions where indicated. The specific selection, sequence, and duration are decided by your physician.

See the 'Therapies that may be part of your programme' section below for examples of what this can include.

Ayurvedic Therapies for Spine & Vertebral Diseases

These are examples of classical Ayurvedic therapies that may be selected for your programme depending on your condition, stage, and constitutional type. Your treating physician decides which therapies are appropriate — no two programmes are the same.

Treatment Outcomes for Spine & Vertebral Diseases

Approximately 95% of lumbar disc prolapse and sciatica patients avoid surgery through our structured non-surgical programmes.

Most patients report meaningful pain reduction within 7-10 days of intensive treatment and >80% improvement by programme completion.

Cervical spondylosis including those with radiculopathy ( Pain, numbness, weakness spreading to the arms) or Myelopathy ( Spinal compression ) responds equally well — significant neck and hand pain relief and mobility restoration within 2-3 weeks.

Long-term recurrence rates are low when patients maintain the prescribed medication, lifestyle and home exercise protocol.

View Full Glossary →

Abhyanga

Full-body therapeutic oil massage using warm medicated oils. Improves circulation, relieves muscle tension, nourishes tissues, and calms the nervous system. A foundational therapy in Panchakarma.

Cervical Spondylosis

Degenerative changes in the cervical (neck) spine — disc degeneration, bone spurs, and joint arthritis — causing neck pain, stiffness, and sometimes arm tingling or weakness from nerve-root compression.

Greeva Vasti

Localised oil pooling therapy for the cervical (neck) region. Warm medicated oil is retained within a boundary made of black gram dough, providing deep relief for cervical spondylosis and neck pain.

Herniation

A condition where the soft nucleus of a spinal disc pushes through the outer fibrous ring, often compressing adjacent nerve roots and causing pain, numbness, or weakness.

Kati Vasti

Localised oil pooling therapy for the lumbar (lower back) region. Warm medicated oil is retained over the lower back to treat disc bulges, sciatica, and chronic lumbar pain.

Lumbar Disc

The intervertebral disc in the lower-back region of the spine. Disc prolapse (herniation) here compresses nerve roots and is a leading cause of sciatica and back pain.

Pizhichil

Kerala therapy where warm medicated oil is continuously poured over the body in rhythmic streams while being gently massaged. Used for paralysis, muscle wasting, arthritis, and rejuvenation.

Sciatica

Pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve — from the lower back, through the buttock, and down the back of the leg. Most commonly caused by lumbar disc herniation or spinal stenosis compressing the nerve root.

Spinal Stenosis

Narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses the spinal cord or nerve roots. Lumbar stenosis typically causes pain and heaviness in the legs when walking (neurogenic claudication).

Spondylosis

Age-related degenerative changes in the spine including disc dehydration, bone spurs (osteophytes), and ligament thickening. Cervical spondylosis affects the neck; lumbar spondylosis affects the lower back.
