Can Ayurveda Effectively treat AVN without Surgery?
Avascular Necrosis (AVN) occurs when blood supply to the bone is disrupted, causing bone tissue to die. The femoral head (hip joint) is most commonly affected. The key question patients ask: can Ayurveda actually regenerate dead bone?
What the Clinical Evidence Shows
At AVN Arogya, we have treated over 1,00,000 patients over 35+ years at our IP facilities. This includes over thousand cases of AVN of all grades from I to IV. Clinical observations show the following:
- Grade 1-2 AVN: Measurable improvement in functional capability, near complete relief of pain and prevention of progression on follow-up MRI in over 95% of patients. We have even seen Radiological evidence of reversal in a few cases.
- Grade 3 AVN: In addition to Pain relief and restoration of normal functioning, the Progression to full fledged collapse arrested in seen in over 90% of cases.
- Grade 4 AVN: We have seen many patients with grade 4 AVN able to postpone surgery and be functional for many years with our treatment approach. However, a few who need to indulge in certain types of activities like sitting on the floor or climbing tall steps tend to benefit from surgery than delaying the same. Based on our assessment of their situation and requirements of the patient, we also recommended them to undergo replacement surgery.
How Ayurvedic Treatment Works for AVN
The Philosophy of treatment at AVN Arogya
Treatment at AVN Arogya is clearly designed based on a very thorough understanding of the underlying causes resulting in any particular health condition. A living being is a very dynamic phenomenon, with a constant interplay of several factors, both internal and external, resulting in either optimal health or ill health.
Based on a deep understanding of Ayurvedic principles, we believe in addressing the fundamental factors deviating the systems in our body away from a state of health to one of improper functioning, which stands in the way of healing and results in diseases not recovering spontaneously. We use this philosophy to correct the way the body works and believe that the body is a miracle capable of healing itself given the right support.
Based on this understanding and a clear understanding of the role that different types of interventions play in addressing a disease condition, we integrate this foundational wisdom of Ayurveda with all modern developments in terms of:
- rehabilitation techniques
- supplements
- products that are available that are supportive in the healing journey
- a psychosomatic approach
- lifestyle changes, diet, etc.
in a very holistic manner, addressing multiple factors that adversely influence healing and bringing them to a state which is supportive of healing. This, we have seen, creates miracles in the way people respond to health challenges.
The treatment for Avascular Necrosis (AVN) @ AVN Arogya
The treatment for AVN or Avascular Necrosis starts with a detailed investigation icluding MRI of the affected joint, as well as blood reports to identify the root causes which result in this condition in the particular patient. The whole approach to treatment is then personalized based on this individualistic understanding of the particular patient's risk profile and body's health situation. The treatment commences with a 21-day inpatient protocol which includes the following:
- Purely herbal Ayurvedic medicines and supplements Classical bone-regenerative and anti-inflammatory formulations and those addressing sub optimal functions in the body hampering healing.
- Panchakarma and Upkarma therapies ( 2 sessions / day) - therapy protocols totally personalized to the individual's condition of health and disease
- Physiotherapy — Addressing pain relief, range of motion, and strengthening of joints in sequential order
- Diet - designed specifically to help patients with increased lipid levels or carbohydrate metabolism defects to reverse those situations and enable improved blood flow and healing in the body.
- Lifestyle modification - specific modification of activities to enable optimal healing and to improve functional life of the joints
This is followed by administration of medicines, external oil applications, exercises, and continuation of diet and lifestyle modifications over a period of a year, before a repeat MRI is taken to ascertain the arrest of progression in the condition. The patient also is reviewed periodically through online consultations and medicines are supplied to them at their doorsteps to enable continuity of care and complete prevention of further progression, leading to functional recovery, In addition to symptomatic relief from pain and prevention of the need to undergo replacement surgery for years to come.
What Patients Can Expect
- Pain reduction within the first 2 -3 weeks
- Improved walking ability by discharge
- Near normal functional recovery by 6-8 months
- MRI follow-up after 12 months to track arrest in progression.
- Complete treatment cycle: 18-24 months including Medicines, supplements, oil application, exercises, and not gaining weight
The Importance of Early Intervention
The earlier AVN is detected and treated, the better the outcomes. Grade 1 patients have the best prognosis. If you've been diagnosed with AVN — especially after steroid use, alcohol use, or hip fracture — early Ayurvedic intervention can preserve your joint and prevent the need for surgery, and help restoration of normal function and high quality of life.
