Abhyangam

About Abhyangam

Abhyanga is full-body application of warm medicated oil selected specifically for the patient's Prakriti, Vikriti and condition. It is both a preparatory therapy (Purvakarma) for deeper Panchakarma procedures and a complete therapy in its own right for Vata-predominant conditions. Classical Ayurveda considers daily self-Abhyanga (Dinacharya) one of the most important self-care practices.

When Abhyangam may — and may not — be appropriate

May be appropriate for

  • Musculoskeletal pain and stiffness
  • Stress and sleep disorders
  • Neurological conditions
  • Skin dryness (Vata conditions)
  • Preparatory therapy for most Panchakarma programmes
  • Rejuvenation and preventive wellness

When it should NOT be done

  • Acute fever or infections
  • Heavy congestion or recent heavy meal
  • Active acute inflammation (heat, redness, swelling) in a joint — treated first
  • Certain skin conditions in acute flare

The decision is always individualised by your treating physician.

What to Expect During Abhyangam

Deeply calming and restorative; most patients fall asleep during the session. Benefits accumulate across a course of 7-14 consecutive days.
