Migraine & Headaches — Overview & Ayurvedic Understanding

Migraine is a complex neurovascular disorder causing recurrent severe headaches often with nausea, photophobia, and aura. Ayurvedic care addresses the underlying Pitta-Vata imbalance and nervous-system hyperexcitability, dramatically reducing frequency.

Symptoms of Migraine & Headaches

Severe unilateral throbbing headaches

Nausea, vomiting

Photophobia, phonophobia

Aura in some patients

Recurrence every few days to weeks

Functional disability during attacks

Causes & Risk Factors for Migraine & Headaches

Neurovascular hyperexcitability

Stress, sleep disruption, hormonal shifts

Dietary triggers (caffeine, tyramine, fasting)

Screen over-exposure

Genetic predisposition

Pitta-Vata dosha imbalance

How We Diagnose Migraine & Headaches

Clinical diagnosis based on ICHD criteria. MIDAS disability score. Review of trigger diary. Ayurvedic Pitta-Vata assessment.

Migraine & Headaches — Surgery vs Non-Surgical Ayurvedic Treatment

Why Non-Surgical Ayurvedic Treatment Works for Migraine & Headaches

Migraine is inherently non-surgical. Personalised Ayurvedic therapies, Medhya Rasayanas, and trigger-management produce sustained reduction in frequency.

When Surgery Is the Right Path

Rarely surgical — intractable cluster headaches may consider nerve blocks or neurostimulation.

We maintain transparent referral relationships with leading orthopaedic and specialist surgeons.

After an initial consultation, the physician advises the right pathway for you. Some conditions can be supported with outpatient medicines and home guidance, while many neurological conditions respond best to structured visiting therapy or an inpatient rehabilitation programme.

Treatment cost

We do not publish a price for migraine & headaches treatment, and that is deliberate. AVN Arogya does not use fixed protocols — the treating physician designs each programme individually, and it is that protocol which determines the cost.

It is only at the end of your consultation that the physician can say which kind of care you actually need:

  • Outpatient — medicines to take at home, with review visits. The least involved option, and for many people it is enough.
  • Visiting therapy — you come in for therapy sessions over a period and return home the same day.
  • Inpatient admission — you stay with us for intensive daily therapy. Here the estimate also depends on the duration the physician recommends and the room category you choose.

Once those are decided we give you a written estimate for your own plan, including what your insurance is likely to cover. Quoting a figure before the assessment would mean quoting one that may not apply to you.

Why Choose AVN Arogya for Migraine & Headaches?

Synergistic Care Model: Combines authentic Panchakarma therapies with customized therapeutic yoga under one roof for complete mind-body stabilization. Root-Cause Gut-Brain Axis Reset: Focuses on eliminating deep-seated Pitta-Vata imbalances and metabolic toxins (Ama) rather than relying on lifetime dependence on daily pain suppressants, triptans, or sedatives. Customized Trigger Management: Every treatment sequence, oil formulation, diet plan, and yoga prescription is personalized to the patient’s specific migraine triggers (stress, digestive issues, hormonal fluctuations, or sleep deprivation) and Prakriti. Holistic Complication Prevention: Reduces the intensity, duration, and frequency of attacks while preventing medication-overuse headaches (rebound migraines) naturally.

Migraine & Headaches — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, many health insurance policies cover inpatient Ayurvedic treatment under the AYUSH benefit, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. The extent of coverage—including eligible treatments, room rent limits, waiting periods, and exclusions—varies from one insurance provider and policy to another. As coverage is policy-specific, we recommend that you check with your insurance provider to confirm whether your policy includes AYUSH benefits and whether your proposed treatment is eligible for coverage. AVN Arogya is NABH-accredited and empanelled with most major insurance companies and TPAs, enabling eligible patients to avail cashless treatment or reimbursement assistance, subject to insurance approval.

AVN Arogya is NABH Accredited, reflecting our commitment to maintaining high standards of patient safety, clinical care, quality management, and healthcare practices. We follow NABH standards across our operations, ensuring a structured approach to treatment protocols, patient care, safety practices, and continuous quality improvement.

Yes. AVN Arogya provides the necessary supporting documents to help international patients apply for a Health Visa. Based on the treating doctor's recommendation, we can issue an Invitation Letter stating the medical condition, the need for inpatient treatment, and the recommended duration of stay at the hospital. This letter can be used to support your health visa application. Where required, we can also generate the Invitation Letter through the FRRO portal as per the applicable guidelines. To prepare the invitation letter, patients are required to provide a copy of their passport and other relevant details requested by our team. For assistance with health visa documentation or to request an invitation letter, please contact our Customer Care Team at +91 95002 92220. Our team will guide you through the documentation and application process.

We understand this conversation can be difficult. A few approaches that work: (1) Start with a telemedicine consultation — hearing from a qualified physician is more convincing than a website, (2) Share specific case outcomes for their condition (we can provide references), (3) Emphasise that we work WITH their existing doctors, not against them, (4) Reassure them that they won't be asked to stop current medicines, (5) If they're hesitant about travel, our visiting specialists at 6 clinics across 6 cities may be closer. Our care coordinators are experienced at having these conversations with families.

Consultation fees are ₹150 for a phone (tele) consultation with a Physician or Senior Physician, ₹300 for an in-person consultation and for a review with a Senior Consultant Physician, and ₹500 for a video consultation with a Senior Consultant Physician. First-time patients pay a one-time registration fee of ₹50 in addition, except for phone consultations. OP therapy packages are quoted separately, based on the treatment plan your physician recommends after the consultation. We provide a detailed cost estimate before treatment begins — no surprises.

Booking your first consultation is simple. You can: • Book online through our website by clicking the "Book Consultation" button. • Call or WhatsApp us at +91 95002 92220 to schedule an appointment. • Visit our Madurai hospital or any of our 5 AVN Arogya clinics to book your consultation in person. To help our doctors assess your condition accurately, please bring any previous medical records, MRI or X-ray reports, laboratory investigations, and a list of your current medications. Our patient care team will assist you in scheduling a convenient appointment and guide you through the consultation process.

Madurai is well-connected by rail, road, and air. There are direct flights from Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, and several connecting flights from most parts of the country. We provide complimentary airport/railway station pickup for all outstation patients coming to our Madurai hospital. For inpatient treatment, accommodation is included. Our care coordinator helps plan travel dates, treatment schedule, and local arrangements. Start with a telemedicine consultation to plan the duration before booking travel. Continuous pouring of warm medicated oil in a steady stream on the forehead (third eye). Deeply calming therapy for insomnia, anxiety, migraine, stress, and neurological conditions.

Medicated enema therapy — the most important of the five Panchakarma procedures for Vata disorders. Uses herbal decoctions and oils to treat disc disorders, arthritis, neurological conditions, and chronic pain.

Ama

Metabolic toxins that accumulate from incomplete digestion. Considered the root cause of most diseases in Ayurveda. Panchakarma detoxification aims to eliminate Ama from tissues.
