Surgical removal of the tonsils.
Tonsillectomy is an operation to remove the tonsils, the two oval pads of tissue at the back of the throat. It is usually considered for frequent or severe tonsillitis, a collection of pus beside the tonsil, or enlarged tonsils that block breathing during sleep. It is done under general anaesthesia, and the throat is usually sore for a week or two afterwards.
