A condition where the inner lining of the womb grows into its muscular wall, causing painful, heavy periods.
Adenomyosis is a condition in which the inner lining of the womb grows into the muscular wall of the womb. This tissue still responds to the monthly cycle, so the womb can become enlarged and tender. The main symptoms are heavy, painful periods and pelvic pain. It is most often found in women in their forties and is usually confirmed by an ultrasound or MRI scan.
