Pain caused by a stimulus that is not normally painful, such as light touch.
Allodynia is pain caused by something that would not normally hurt, such as a light touch, clothing brushing the skin or mild warmth. It happens when pain nerves become oversensitive and misread ordinary sensations as painful. It is seen in nerve damage, fibromyalgia, migraine and some long-term pain conditions. Doctors check for it by gently stroking or touching the affected skin.
