Thyroiditis

Thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid gland, the butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck that controls metabolism. Depending on the type, it can make the thyroid overactive, underactive, or one followed by the other. Causes include autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto's, viral infections and the months after pregnancy. It is diagnosed with thyroid blood tests and sometimes ultrasound.
