Definition
Formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing blood flow.
Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot, called a thrombus, inside a blood vessel, partly or completely blocking the flow of blood. In a leg vein it causes pain, swelling and warmth; in an artery it can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Long periods of immobility, surgery, smoking and some medical conditions raise the risk. It needs urgent medical attention.
