Surgical removal of the inflamed synovial lining of a joint.
Synovectomy is a surgical operation to remove the inflamed synovium, the thin membrane that lines a joint and produces lubricating fluid. It may be considered when a joint stays persistently swollen and painful despite medicines, for example in rheumatoid arthritis. It can be done through open surgery or by keyhole arthroscopy, most often on the knee, wrist or elbow.
