Damage to the retina at the back of the eye, often a complication of diabetes.
Retinopathy is damage to the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It is most often a complication of diabetes or high blood pressure, which harm the small blood vessels there. Early stages usually cause no symptoms, but it can later blur or reduce vision. Regular eye examinations, including checks of the back of the eye, help detect it early.
