Periodontitis is advanced gum disease in which infection damages the soft tissue and bone that hold the teeth in place. It usually develops from untreated gingivitis. Signs include bleeding, swollen or receding gums, bad breath, loose teeth and changes in bite. It is linked to smoking and diabetes. Dentists diagnose it by measuring gum pockets and taking X-rays.
