Inflammation of the pericardium, the sac around the heart, causing chest pain.
Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, the thin sac that surrounds the heart. It typically causes sharp chest pain that worsens when breathing in or lying flat and eases when sitting forward. It is often triggered by a viral infection, though other causes exist. An ECG, echocardiogram and blood tests are used to diagnose it and to rule out a heart attack.
