Inflammation of the pancreas, causing severe upper abdominal pain, often with nausea and vomiting.
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the gland behind the stomach that makes digestive juices and insulin. It causes severe pain in the upper abdomen that may spread to the back, often with nausea, vomiting and fever. Gallstones and heavy alcohol use are the commonest causes. Acute attacks need hospital care, and blood tests and scans confirm the diagnosis.
