Sharp, shooting pain felt along the course of a nerve.
Neuralgia is sharp, shooting, burning or stabbing pain that follows the path of a nerve. The pain often comes in sudden bursts and can be triggered by light touch, chewing or movement. Common forms include trigeminal neuralgia in the face and pain that lingers after shingles. It results from irritation or damage to the nerve and is diagnosed mainly from the pattern of symptoms.
