Definition
Death of body tissue caused by loss of blood supply, injury or disease.
Necrosis is the death of body tissue, which happens when cells are deprived of blood supply or are badly damaged by injury, infection, toxins or disease. Once tissue has died it cannot recover. Examples include gangrene in the feet of people with poor circulation and avascular necrosis, where part of a bone dies because its blood supply is cut off.
