A viral infection ('glandular fever') causing fever, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes.
Mononucleosis, often called glandular fever, is a viral infection usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. It is most common in teenagers and young adults and spreads through saliva. Typical symptoms are fever, a very sore throat, swollen glands in the neck and marked tiredness, which can last several weeks. The spleen may enlarge, so contact sports are usually avoided during recovery.
