Inflammation of breast tissue, often during breastfeeding, causing pain, swelling and redness.
Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue that most often affects women who are breastfeeding. Part of the breast becomes painful, swollen, warm and red, and there may be fever, chills and a flu-like feeling. It often begins when milk builds up in the breast, and sometimes infection follows. Continuing to empty the breast is usually advised, and a doctor should assess it.
