Laryngotracheobronchitis, better known as croup, is inflammation of the voice box, windpipe and larger airways, usually caused by a virus. It mainly affects young children and produces a distinctive barking cough, hoarse voice and a harsh noise when breathing in. Symptoms are often worse at night. Children who struggle to breathe need urgent medical attention.
