Surgical removal of the uterus (womb).
Hysterectomy is an operation to remove the uterus, or womb. Depending on the reason, the cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed. It may be advised for heavy bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis, prolapse or some cancers. After a hysterectomy a woman no longer has periods and cannot become pregnant. It can be done through the abdomen, the vagina or keyhole surgery.
