Enlargement of a tissue or organ due to an increase in the size of its cells.
Hypertrophy is the enlargement of a tissue or organ because its individual cells grow bigger, rather than increasing in number. It can be a normal response, such as muscles growing with exercise, or a sign of strain, such as the heart muscle thickening with long-standing high blood pressure. Scans and other tests help doctors judge whether it is healthy or a concern.
