Definition
Accumulation of watery fluid within a joint cavity, causing swelling.
Hydrarthrosis is the build-up of clear, watery fluid inside a joint, making it look swollen and feel tight. The knee is the joint most often affected. It may follow injury, arthritis or irritation of the joint lining, and sometimes appears without a clear cause. Doctors check it by examination and imaging, and may draw off fluid for testing.
