Surgical replacement of half of a joint, commonly half of the hip.
Hemiarthroplasty is an operation that replaces half of a joint, most commonly the ball at the top of the thigh bone in the hip, while leaving the socket untouched. It is often used after a hip fracture in older adults. Compared with a total joint replacement it is a smaller procedure, and rehabilitation with physiotherapy helps the person walk again.
