A sexually transmitted bacterial infection.
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can cause a thick discharge from the penis or vagina, pain when passing urine and, in women, bleeding between periods, though many people have no symptoms. Left untreated, it can lead to infertility and joint infection. It is diagnosed with a urine test or swab and treated with antibiotics.
