Inflammation of the stomach and intestines, usually from infection, causing diarrhoea and vomiting.
Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach and intestines, usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection, often from contaminated food or water. It causes diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and sometimes fever. Most cases settle within a few days. The main risk is dehydration, so sipping fluids or oral rehydration solution is important, especially for young children and older adults.
