Infection of the inner lining of the heart and its valves — a serious condition.
Endocarditis is an infection of the endocardium, the inner lining of the heart chambers and valves, usually caused by bacteria entering the bloodstream. It is a serious condition. Symptoms include persistent fever, tiredness, night sweats, breathlessness and a new heart murmur. People with damaged or artificial heart valves are at higher risk. Blood cultures and an echocardiogram are used to diagnose it.
