Modern MedicalDactylitis is painful swelling of an entire finger or toe, so that it looks like a sausage, which is why it is often called a sausage digit. It happens when the joints and tendons along the digit become inflamed together. It is a characteristic feature of psoriatic arthritis and can also occur in reactive arthritis, gout and sickle cell disease.
