Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry air into the lungs. It causes a cough that brings up mucus, chest discomfort, wheezing and breathlessness. Acute bronchitis usually follows a cold and settles within a few weeks. Chronic bronchitis, often linked to smoking, means a productive cough lasting at least three months in two consecutive years.
