Inflammation of the appendix, causing abdominal pain that usually needs urgent surgery.
Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch attached to the large intestine on the lower right side of the abdomen. Pain often starts around the navel and moves to the lower right, becoming sharper, with fever, nausea and loss of appetite. It usually needs urgent surgery, because an inflamed appendix can burst. Anyone with these symptoms should seek emergency care.
