Synovial Fluid

Synovial fluid is the thick, slippery fluid found inside movable joints such as the knee, hip and shoulder. It is produced by the joint lining and works like a lubricant, reducing friction between cartilage surfaces, cushioning impact and carrying nutrients to the cartilage. In some joint conditions, a doctor may draw out a small sample with a needle to check for infection, crystals or inflammation.
