Ligament

anatomy

A ligament is a tough, slightly elastic band of fibrous tissue that connects one bone to another at a joint. Ligaments hold joints steady and stop them moving too far in any direction. A sudden twist or overstretch can sprain or tear a ligament, causing pain, swelling and a feeling that the joint is loose or gives way, as often happens at the ankle and knee.

Definition

A tough band of fibrous tissue connecting bones to bones at a joint, providing stability.
