anatomyA dermatome is an area of skin that receives its sensation from a single spinal nerve root. Dermatomes form a predictable map across the body, running in bands down the arms, trunk and legs. When a patient describes exactly where numbness, tingling or pain is felt, doctors compare it with this map to work out which nerve root in the spine is likely irritated.
