The point where a nerve branches off from the spinal cord and exits the spine through small openings between vertebrae. Compression of nerve roots by herniated discs or bone spurs causes conditions like sciatica and radiculopathy.
Nerve Root
anatomyA nerve root is the first part of a spinal nerve, where it branches off the spinal cord and leaves the spine through a small opening between two vertebrae. There is a pair of nerve roots at each spinal level. If a herniated disc or bone spur presses on a nerve root, pain, numbness or weakness can travel along that nerve, as in sciatica or radiculopathy.
