Constant tingling

Constant tingling (paraesthesia) is a persistent pins-and-needles sensation that may affect the hands, feet, arms, or legs. Unlike occasional tingling from sitting in one position too long, constant tingling suggests ongoing nerve irritation or damage. It is an important symptom that warrants investigation to identify and treat the underlying cause.

Common Causes of Constant tingling

  • Peripheral neuropathy (diabetes, B12 deficiency)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cervical or lumbar disc herniation
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Poor circulation (peripheral vascular disease)

When to Seek Urgent Medical Care for Constant tingling

These signs may indicate a serious problem — don't wait, seek medical care right away:

  • See a doctor if tingling is persistent, progressive, affects both sides of the body, is accompanied by weakness or loss of coordination, or follows a neck or back injury.
