Perhaps a relative has warned you, or you have read a news report about kidney damage or heavy metals in herbal medicines. The worry is fair, and it has a real basis. But it comes almost entirely from products made without quality control and taken without a doctor’s advice. Every medicine we use at AVN Arogya is made by our own GMP-certified sister company, and every batch is tested for heavy metal contamination. Our physicians prescribe these medicines after a full assessment and keep track of how you respond.
Where the worry about Ayurvedic medicines and the liver comes from
There are two separate concerns, and it helps to look at each one plainly.
Heavy metals. Some traditional Ayurvedic preparations are made with processed minerals and metals. When they are made carelessly, or bought from unregulated sources, they can contain harmful amounts of lead, mercury or arsenic. Studies of Ayurvedic products bought online have found this kind of contamination more than once. Over time, heavy metals can harm the kidneys, the nerves and other organs.
Liver injury from herbs. Separately from metals, a small number of plants can strain the liver. This happens mostly at high doses, over long periods, or in someone whose liver is already weak.
What the reported cases usually have in common is a product with an unclear label, bought outside a licensed pharmacy, and taken for months with no doctor keeping track. That is a manufacturing and supervision problem. It is not a reason to turn away from Ayurveda.
Why we take medicine safety so seriously
Ayurvedic medicines work. They strengthen the body's own powerful ability to heal, and they work differently from modern drugs, which is why they add a real extra dimension to recovery. Anything strong enough to help the body is strong enough to deserve respect. Herbal medicines are active substances, so they should be prescribed after an assessment and taken as directed.
Whether an Ayurvedic medicine is safe for you depends on four things:
- who made it, and under what licence
- whether each batch has been tested for heavy metals & contamination
- whether the dose and duration were set by a physician who examined you
- whether someone is checking how your body responds
AVN takes care of all four.
How AVN makes and tests its Ayurvedic medicines
Making medicines is part of AVN's own history. The group set up its first Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing unit decades ago, and later built a GMP-certified (Good Manufacturing Practice) facility. Today our medicines are made by AVN Ayurveda Formulations Pvt Ltd, the group's GMP-certified manufacturing arm, whose medicines are also exported to Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and the USA.
- We use classical Ayurvedic formulations with established safety profiles, not untested herbal mixtures.
- Every batch is tested for microbial contamination and potency, as AYUSH Ministry regulations require.
- Every batch of our medicines is tested to international standards for heavy metals.
- We can give you the batch details for any medicine we prescribe, on request.
Your medicines come from our own pharmacy, so you are never handed something of unknown origin.
How our physicians protect your liver and kidneys during treatment
Safety begins at the consultation. An outpatient consultation assesses your condition and advises you; your physician decides the right pathway. The physician takes a detailed history and reviews your existing MRI, X-ray and blood reports, and may recommend further tests if needed. Your complete medical history and current medicines are reviewed before anything is prescribed.
When your history or your medicines call for it, your physician checks your liver and kidney function before treatment, and adjusts the plan based on the results.
Our hospital has its own diagnostic laboratory, so these tests can be done on site.
Your progress is monitored, and if you have any unexpected reaction, the team adjusts the medications / therapies straight away. Where needed, our doctors coordinate with your allopathic specialists. And whatever you are prescribed by us, carry on with the medicines your other doctors have prescribed: never stop or reduce them on your own.
If you already have liver or kidney disease
Tell your physician at the very first visit, and bring your latest liver and kidney function reports. Existing liver or kidney disease does not by itself rule out Ayurvedic treatment; it means your physician chooses the medicines, doses and duration with your liver and kidneys in mind. Extra care is also needed:
- if you take other medicines that are known to affect the liver or kidneys
- in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, where only pregnancy-safe formulations are used, in coordination with your obstetrician
- for young children, whose doses must be worked out by a physician
How to stay safe with any Ayurvedic medicine
- Take only medicines prescribed for you by a qualified physician who has examined you.
- Buy only from a licensed source, with a clear label naming the maker and the batch. Unlabelled products, online marketplaces and informal suppliers are where most contamination cases come from.
- Do not keep taking medicine for months without a review.
- Tell your AVN physician about every medicine you take, Ayurvedic and allopathic; our physicians ask about each one and advise you which to continue.
- Never stop a prescribed allopathic medicine because you have started Ayurveda.
Warning signs: see a doctor urgently if
After starting any new medicine, herbal or otherwise, get medical help quickly if you notice:
- yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes
- very dark urine or pale stools
- pain in the upper right side of the tummy, with nausea or vomiting
- passing much less urine than usual, or new swelling of the legs, ankles or face
- unusual tiredness, confusion or itching all over the body
Stop the new medicine only on a doctor's advice, and tell your AVN physician what happened.
Frequently asked questions
Do Ayurvedic medicines contain heavy metals?
Some traditional preparations include processed minerals and metals, and badly made or unregulated products have been found to contain harmful levels of lead, mercury or arsenic. AVN does not manufacture any medicine with any heavy metal ingredient. Every batch of the medicines we use is tested for heavy metals and contamination, and you can ask us for the batch details.
Can Ayurvedic medicines damage the kidneys?
Properly made medicines, prescribed after an assessment and taken as directed, are used safely by our patients every day. The documented kidney problems are linked mainly to heavy-metal contamination in unregulated products. If you already have kidney disease, tell your physician so the medicines and doses can be chosen with that in mind.
Are Ayurvedic medicines free of side effects because they are natural?
No medicine should be described that way. Herbal medicines are active substances and can have side effects and interactions. Reactions to our medicines are uncommon and usually mild, typically a little digestive adjustment in the first few days, and your physician watches for them.
I have fatty liver. Can I still take Ayurvedic treatment?
Talk to a physician first, rather than starting anything on your own. Bring your recent liver reports and a list of everything you take, and your physician will decide what is suitable for you.
Should I stop my allopathic medicines when I start Ayurveda?
No. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own; any change is a decision for the doctor who prescribed it.
Your liver and kidneys deserve medicines you can trace and physicians who keep watch. See how an outpatient consultation at AVN Arogya works, or book a consultation. Bring your recent blood reports and a list of every medicine you take.
