Virechanam
Also known as Therapeutic Purgation
Virechana therapy (Virechanam) is a supervised Ayurvedic cleansing treatment in which a specially prepared herbal formulation produces a controlled, graduated clearing of the bowels. It is one of the five Panchakarma procedures. At AVN Arogya it is given in our OP or inpatient unit, after a few days of preparatory oil therapy and sweating, as part of personalised programmes for skin, autoimmune and liver conditions.
Whether this therapy is right for you is a physician's decision
About Virechanam
Virechana is therapeutic purgation that clears Pitta-related toxins from the small intestine, liver, and gallbladder region. One of the most widely useful Panchakarma procedures — applicable across skin disorders, autoimmune diseases, liver conditions, and certain gynaecological presentations.

The decision is always individualised by your treating physician.

Virechanam: Frequently Asked Questions
Our physicians consider Virechana for long-standing skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, for autoimmune and rheumatic conditions such as rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, for liver and gallbladder problems, and for some recurring headaches and gynaecological conditions. Whether it suits you is decided only after a consultation, because every programme at AVN Arogya is personalised.
It begins with preparation: medicated oil therapy and sweating therapy over a few days. On the main day, a herbal purgative formulation is given and you have a series of graduated bowel movements. Afterwards you return to normal food step by step on a careful diet plan. The main procedure takes one day; the whole programme usually runs 5 to 8 days. It could also be done along with your regular course of therapy for other ailments.
Virechana is carried out after a thorough assessment of your condition and need to undergo the procedure, with your physician and his / her team watching you through the procedure. It is not given to people who are weak or dehydrated, who have had recent stomach or bowel surgery, who are in late pregnancy, or who have severe diarrhoea or poor absorption. Children are treated only on a plan designed for children.
Many of the patients we treat describe feeling lighter and clearer in the day or two after the procedure. Some tiredness on the procedure day is normal while the bowel clears. The diet plan that follows is an important part of the treatment, and your physician guides you through each step before you go home.
At AVN Arogya, Virechana is done only after proper preparatory procedures like oiling (oleation) and sweating (sudation) along with appropriate intake of medicated ghee / oil (snehapanam) under the instruction of our Doctors. Detailed instructions regarding the entire procedure are explained to the patients with handouts for the same. It can then be done at the OP or IP setting with close supervision. In case of necessity, our physicians can first assess you in an outpatient or video consultation and advise whether an inpatient programme is right for you.
