Nipple discharge

Nipple discharge is any fluid that comes from the nipple, either spontaneously or when squeezed. The colour and consistency can range from clear to bloody and provide clues about the cause. Any spontaneous nipple discharge should be evaluated to rule out underlying breast conditions.

Common Causes of Nipple discharge

  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy, breastfeeding)
  • Intraductal papilloma
  • Fibrocystic breast changes
  • Elevated prolactin levels
  • Breast infection (mastitis)
