Cough with phlegm

A productive cough (wet cough) brings up mucus or phlegm from the respiratory tract. The colour and consistency of the phlegm can provide clues: clear or white is often viral, yellow or green may suggest bacterial infection, and rusty or blood-streaked needs urgent attention. This type of cough should generally not be suppressed, as it helps clear the airways.
