Enthesitis is inflammation at the points where tendons or ligaments attach to bone, called entheses. It causes localised pain, tenderness and sometimes swelling, commonly at the back of the heel, the sole of the foot or around the pelvis. It is a hallmark of ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis, and is checked by pressing these sites and by ultrasound or MRI.
