Definition
Lasting tightening of muscles, tendons, or skin that limits normal joint movement.
A contracture is a lasting tightening of muscles, tendons, ligaments or skin that stops a joint from moving through its normal range. The joint may stay bent and resist straightening. Contractures can follow long periods of immobility, stroke, burns, cerebral palsy or arthritis. Early stretching, positioning and movement are important because established contractures become harder to loosen.
