Muscle Spasm, Back Muscle Spasm & Strain :

Muscular spasm is an involuntary contraction of the muscles which causes pain in the affected area.
Muscular strain is a condition in which there is injury to the muscle leading to tearing of muscle fibres as a result of trauma or over stretching. Muscle Spasm and strain are one of the most common causes for low back pain.

Causes of Back pain due to Muscle Spasm or Strain

  • Improper posture while travelling, sleeping or sitting – Improper posture leads to unequal pressure on the muscles and those muscles that are subjected to excessive pressure, they develop strain and this also leads to spasm and pain.
  • Lifting heavy weights – when done in improper manner can also lead to strain and spasm of muscles.
  • Calcium or Vitamin D deficiency – increases the tendency of the muscles to get into spasm.
  • Stress – It is a very common cause for increased muscular tension or increased incidence of muscular spasm which manifests as cervical pain (neck pain) and low back ache. Usually in cases where all the investigations turn out to be negative, stress is seen to be the culprit in causing low back pain.

Symptoms of Muscle Spasm & Strain

  • Mild to severe pain in the back
  • Restriction or difficulty in movement
  • Pain on touch
  • Swelling in the affected area
  • Weakness of affected muscles and tendons

Treatment For Low Back Ache Due To Muscule Spasm & Strain Treatment is aimed at relieving pain and relaxing the muscles that are in spasm and in the case of strain to heal the torn muscle fibres.
Conventional or Allopathic treatment of back pain due to muscle spasm & Strain.

Allopathic treatment comprises of administration of analgesics (Pain killers), muscle relaxants, Calcium or Vitamin D supplementation in case of patients with deficiency and physiotherapy and stretching exercises to relieve the tightness of the muscles. These modalities help relieve back pain effectively in most cases. The problem however tends to recur if the cause is stress.

  • Ayurvedic Treatment for Muscle Spasm & Strain At AVN AROGYA
At AVN Arogya we have a detailed consultation with the patient to arrive at the causative factors, the patient’s individual constitution, lifestyle etc and then draw out an individualized treatment plan to suit the patient’s condition.

We generally treat back pain due to muscle spasm and strain by administering herbal medicines that help in relaxing the muscles and healing the torn muscle fibres and asking the patients to apply some of our medicated oils after warming them regularly in an outpatient basis. This usually results in good relief. We also advice patients to continue regular stretching exercises to prevent tightness of the muscles. However if the problem tends to recur due to various reasons like chronic stress, we administer ayurvedic therapeutic procedures like Abhyanga (Medicated oil Massage), Podikkizhi (Massage with Herbal powders), Taila Dhara (Pouring of medicated oils), Kativasthi (Pooling oil at the back) along with herbal medications that are useful for stress to obtain long-term relief. At our hospital we also use Physiotherapy based interventions where required.
